WHS Committee Duties and Responsibilities

A health and safety committee (HSC) is a more formal way to consult. It brings together the person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) and workers to discuss and develop ways to improve health and safety at work. Health and safety committees are separate to health and safety representatives (HSRs). Both can successfully contribute to safety at your workplace. Committees tend to address broad organisational issues; HSRs will usually concentrate on issues specific to their work group. Health and safety committees facilitate cooperation between the employer or person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) and workers in developing and carrying out measures to ensure health and safety at work. This includes health and safety standards, rules and procedures for the workplace.

HSCs provide an effective means for persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs) to meet regularly to talk about work health and safety matters. They bring together workers’ practical knowledge of their individual jobs and the PCBU’s overview of the workplace and work organisation.
