MetroTas Mobile Application Re-development
Metro Tasmania widely known as Metro is a Tasmanian government business enterprise which is the
largest bus operator in Tasmania. Despite having huge customer base, its mobile application lacks consistency and major functionalities to suit the user’s need and meet their expectations. Metro Tas
currently uses smartcard ticketing system along with paper receipt tickets for cash only on the bus.
Lack of updates and information in the mobile application has caused a major drawback for Metro Tas
being a modern transportation enterprise.
The current fundamental functions of MetroTas application have insufficient ease of use and client
experience. The subsequent goal of the sketch is to provide solutions to add better utility to the
application. Mobile payments have become a versatile method of payment system and replacement of
physical smart card has become a necessity as contactless payment users of android have reached over 150 million globally.
This realization has motivated the team to rebuild the existing Metro Tas mobile application so that the
mass people can get benefits of it. Mobile application is a powerful and safe method of digitalized NFC
payments & live update of the bus. With the updated version of the current application, the customers
will be able to get live update of the bus as well as availability of seats based on the entry check ins.
The existing application shows the timing and route, but it does not provide enough information once
the bus leaves interchange. However, the bus timing provided at the stoppage is static and there is no
sort of devices to let user know if the bus is late/delayed. Then the team decided to go ahead with such
an application that provides live update of buses and can be used as e-wallet.
